A Quick Look at the 2018 BMW 3 Series

The new BMW 3 Series has some stiff competition in the compact sedan market, but it's still a worthy contender. BMW sets the benchmark by offering the ideal combination of class, comfort, technology, and driving dynamics. Read on to learn more about the 2018 3 Series.

Efficiency and Power

The RWD 320i sedan is powered by a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder that offers 180hp and 200 lb. ft. of torque. When matched to the eight-speed auto transmission, the engine earns an EPA rating of 24mpg in the city and 35mpg on the highway. The six-speed manual transmission offers comparable fuel economy, and the AWD 320i with xDrive is rated at 23mpg in the city and 35mpg on the highway.

The 328d sedan comes standard with RWD, and AWD is available. The EPA estimates it at 31mpg in the city and 43mpg on the highway with rear-wheel drive, and 30/40 with AWD. The 330i, 330e, and 340i round out the 3 Series lineup.

Options and Features

The 2018 BMW 3 Series starts with the entry-level 320i sedan, which comes with 17” alloys, push-button starting, fog lights, auto stop and start, leatherette upholstery, dual climate controls, Bluetooth connectivity, and the iDrive infotainment system. The 330i, 328d, and 330e come with a similar feature list, but get added conveniences like power adjustable front seats and an auto dimming rearview mirror. Most models in the 3 Series can be fitted with various appearance packages.

Safety

The 3 Series has ABS, forward collision mitigation, stability control, and a full complement of airbags. The available BMW Assist system adds roadside assistance and crash notification, and the optional Driver Assistance Plus bundle combines rear and front parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic braking, and a front collision warning system.

The current BMW 3 Series got a five-star government crash test rating, and the IIHS gave it a Good rating in almost every category. All these safety features, along with the 3 Series' long list of amenities and options, make it a compelling buy.
